Painting your home may seem like an overwhelming project, but if you follow some basic rules, you can dramatically simplify the process and get a professional result. The key thing that I have found is to be prepared and do the small detail work on the front end. Painting your home is not a simple throw it together proposition. You need to get all the supplies and materials organized well before you begin. There is nothing so frustrating or challenging as getting part way into the project and realizing you did not have the correct brush or right shade of paint. You are then forced to race to the store, or to fake it. Take my word for it, painting a home with the wrong tools is no fun and yields a terrible result. Below are my tips to painting your home professionally on a budget.

1. Buy the best tools and equipment you can afford, especially paint brushes.

2. Buy good quality paint and materials. Buying cheap paint is often a false economy as many more coats are usually required.

3. Try to ensure that you have bought enough materials to complete the job. This is essential when buying wall-paper.

4. Don't rush the job. Give paints time to dry between coats.

5. Keep the area where you are decorating as dust free as possible.

6. Follow the manufacturers instructions on tins and other materials. don't always interpret too literally as there is usually a degree of flexibility, especially in diluting paints.

7. Complete all your preparation before you start to decorate.

8. Don't wear wool clothes, if possible wear cotton overalls or jeans and cotton shirt. Remember you clothes will likely get ruined.
